Bicycling Benefits

Bicycling is not only fun, but also a low-impact way to reduce health risks. It can be enjoyed by people of all ages, from young children to older adults. What better way to exercise that is cheap and good for the environment?[1]

Cycling on a regular basis stimulates and improves heart, lungs, and circulation, helping to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. It strengthens the heart muscles, lowers heart rate and reduces blood fat levels.[2] When cycling, you will breathe deeper, perspire, and experience increased body temperature, which helps improve overall fitness levels.

Some of the other health benefits of cycling:

  • Improved joint mobility
  • Decreased stress levels
  • Improved posture, balance, and coordination
  • Weight control
  • Strengthens leg muscles

Make sure to always follow traffic laws, and wear any protective gear required or needed. If you are a beginner, build up slowly. Talk with your primary care provider or physical therapist if in doubt about cycling.

So don’t just sit on the sidelines! Grab a bicycle and start pedaling, for fun and for your health!
